It’s not Christmas without some Schweddy Balls from the gang at Saturday Night Live and from the Yummy Yogini kitchen! Delicious Dish, in particular this Christmas special, has got to be one of my all-time favorite skits on SNL. The gentle tone of Alec Baldwin’s voice paired with the dryness that is Ana Gasteyer plus the spunk of Molly Shannon, equals one of the best skits EVER. Sadly, they don’t make them like these anymore! Thank God for re-runs and YouTube!
Schweddy Balls, if you’re wondering, are a treat made by Pete Schweddy (Baldwin) and are assortments of spherical food goodies made out of everything from meat to cake to candy! They were sold as an assortment in a “Schweddy ball sack” and I’ll stop there if you haven’t seen the sketch before, because I don’t want to ruin it! Balwin returns for other Schweddy favorites but this one is the best and you’ll be on the floor laughing at how oblivious the actresses appear during the description of said balls!
I’m going to a couple of holiday parties this weekend and I figured if I made some Schweddy Balls, it would make for some good conversation! This is a recipe I’ve been working on since making my Dirt Cake last week for Andy’s Birthday. Oreo cookies and cream cheese pair so well together I thought I’d do something with them together again. And when I spotted these Peppermint Joe-Joe’s at Trader Joe’s today, the recipe came to life! Did you know TJ’s makes a gluten-free Joe-Joe? Well they do! So feel free to substitute them instead. I just popped a ball into my mouth and boy did these come out swell… haha! I’m having too much fun with this post…
Peppermint Schweddy Balls- makes 80 balls
Ingredients:
-1 package Trader Joe’s Peppermint Joe Joe’s
-8 oz light cream cheese
-8 oz of semi-sweet chocolate
-8 oz peppermint candies
Directions:
1. Place the Joe-Joe’s (or Oreo’s) in a food processor and crush up into little pieces.
2. In a large bowl, combine the cookie crumbs with the light cream cheese. I used my hands.
3. When everything is combined, roll into little balls using the palm of your hands and place on wax paper.
4. Place the balls in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or until frozen. Crush up the peppermints in the meantime. I used a rolling pin to do this. Place the mints on a piece of wax paper.
5. While the balls are freezing, melt the chocolate. I placed the chocolate in a large mixing bowl over a pan with boiling water in it. The steam melted the chocolate just fine.
5. Using 2 forks, take a ball and swirl it into the melted chocolate and then roll in around on the wax paper with the crushed peppermints on it.
6. Let the balls sit for at least 10 minutes until they harden or stick them in the freezer for a few minutes.
7. Enjoy those delicious, peppermint-y shweddy balls for the holidays!
Oh! And if you didn’t know, Ben & Jerry’s makes a Schweddy Balls ice cream varietal that features malt balls! I DIE!
